Yesterday I saw the first swallow of the year and this morning heard a cuckoo for the first time, so maybe Spring is here. Whether it is or not, let’s hope we have a proper Summer this year and that the politicians don’t manage to spoil it for us! Come what may, the RRWT will do its best to provide enjoyment and fun for you and your dogs.
2009 was a good year for the Trust, with record turnouts and profits for the Chieveley Rally and Christmas Party. Despite dreadful weather, the second Jamboree was enjoyed by all who came and has established itself firmly on the RRWT Calendar. We also made our first appearance at Discover Dogs, in addition to our usual efforts at Crufts and Harrods. And of course our wonderful Peggy Wilson came up trumps again with two Companion Dog Shows and a Car Boot Sale all for our benefit. Our Annual Report gives more details and can be seen elsewhere on the website.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY. First up as usual is Peggy Wilson’s Spring Companion Dog Show, near Bury St Edmunds on Sunday, 30th May. Next, on Sunday, 11th July, is the 21st Chieveley Rally, now under new, younger, management. For details, click on the EVENTS tab. Three weeks later, on Sunday, 1stAugust, is the Car Boot Sale, with the Autumn Companion Dog Show (both in Suffolk) on Sunday, 3rd October. On Summer Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August, our third Jamboree will be held at a location yet to be announced, but watch the website. Finally, our Christmas Party will be at Shipton under Wychwood on Sunday, 5th December.
You and your dogs will be warmly welcomed to any or all of them.
CALENDARS FOR 2011. WE NEED YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS NOW. This is your calendar, it features only rescue Ridgebacks and is the only calendar sold in aid of Ridgeback welfare. Do please support it with pictures of your rescued Ridgeback(s), accompanied by as much past and present information as you can give. Photographs can be black & white or colour, prints from film or digital images, posted or emailed, but they do need to be clear, sharp and capable of being enlarged. Unusual, action and/or amusing pictures will be especially welcome. Please send them to me at the postal or email address at the end of this letter and don’t hesitate to phone me if you have any queries.
FAIRMAN MEMORIAL SALVER. This year’s award of the Fairman Memorial Salver at the Christmas Party was made difficult by the Trustees’ inability to choose between two equally deserving ladies - Anne Coates and Maggie Higgins. Finally we decided to award it jointly to the two of them, each receiving a replica to keep and holding the Salver for 6 months. Anne was recognized for her wonderful help with so many dogs (some of them sick) over many years and Maggie for her generosity and help in kennelling and working with our unfortunate rescue Ridgebacks.
FRIENDS OF RRWT. Launched at the Chieveley Rally last year, Friends of RRWT is well on course to meet its target of 100 members in its first year. If you haven’t already become a “Friend”, you can find all the benefits and an application form by clicking on “Join us” in the May 14th box of News 2010. If you are already a “Friend”, you could always persuade your friends to become “Friends”.
RRWT MERCHANDISE. Click on the MERCHANDISE tab for an up to date mail order price list of our fantastic RRWT merchandise including some exciting new products and a few bargains.
THINKING OF BUYING A NEW VACUUM CLEANER? Then look no further. Normally only available to the trade, Premiere Products, suppliers of quality cleaning products & cleaning equipment are very kindly offering their Premiere Mini vacuum to RRWT supporters at a huge discount. It’s great for dog hairs and is a vacuum cleaner for life as it comes with a lifetime guarantee – PLUS for every one sold through this mailshot, the RRWT will receive £5.00! For a leaflet, please email ewatts@ellerich.co.uk. Please note, this offer ends 30th August 2010.
NEWS FLASHES **We have a Treasurer! Maggie Higgins has kindly volunteered to take over this important post from early July and we have accepted with alacrity. Jan Grimwood, who has shouldered the responsibility for over 15 years, remains a Trustee and has the gratitude of all of us for all she has done. **The RRWT 100 Club still welcomes new subscribers (£12 a year gives you a monthly prize-winning chance and multiples of £12 will give you even better odds). Renewal each year is not automatic, so please use the downloadable form on the DONATIONS tab to make sure you don’t miss out. **Help is needed at all three events at Fornham all Saints, so if you live within reach of Bury St Edmunds and can spare some time on 30th May, 1st August or 3rd October, please phone Peggy Wilsan on 01284 767243. **We can still use any 2nd Class stamps you may be able to spare – please send them to Hilary Maddox, 29 Berks Hill, Chorleywood, Herts, WD3 5AG. Meanwhile, many thanks to all who have already sent them.
THE RRWT CHALLENGE Discussions are under way which will hopefully take us a big step along the way towards having our own premises, but haven’t yet reached the stage where we can make them public. Watch out for further news on our website.
RESCUE UPDATE There are currently 4 Ridgebacks looking for the second chance they all deserve in loving, permanent, homes. They are all kennelled in Buckinghamshire and details plus photographs of them can be found by clicking on the DOGS tab.
This newsletter is the best chance we have of finding homes for these unfortunates. If you could find room in your life for any of them – or know someone who could – Barrie and Carol would be very pleased to hear from you on 0207 485 0691 or by email: ridgebackwelfare@btinternet.com
With all good wishes from the Trustees to you and your dogs for 2010. We hope to see you at one or more of our events during the year.

2009 has been a year of change, with a turn round in the Trust’s financial fortune, the retirement of three Trustees from long-held posts (whilst remaining Trustees), a first stand at Discover Dogs, introduction of Friends of RRWT and the launch of our building fund by new Vice Chairman Trevor Smith.
After the excess of expenditure over income last year, this year’s day to day operation has shown a small profit of about £1400. A major contributory factor was a big increase in merchandise sales as the professional expertise of Rich and Ellen Watts moved this aspect of our work into the 21st century. They were also responsible for introducing in mid-Summer “Friends of RRWT” – a subscription scheme to bring the Trust and its supporters closer together; it is on target to reach 100 members in the first year. Other major sources of income were our regular fund-raising events, plus Peggy Wilson’s two Companion Dog Shows and a Car Boot Sale.
During the year, our Registrars re-homed 35 dogs – a welcome reduction on the previous two years. As always, a number of dogs were able to remain with their original owners thanks to the help and guidance of the Trust. We are extremely grateful to Barrie and Carol Davies for continuing to shoulder the main burden of this but they would be the first to admit that they could not work without the backing of other Trustees and our ever widening “family” of supporters who go to such extraordinary lengths to help us.
We acknowledge with thanks the regular annual donation from the RR Club of Scotland and are pleased to record that the close co-operation between the RRWT and Midlands & Northern Rescue continues. We are tremendously grateful as always to the RR Club of Great Britain for its support in so many ways, including this year a wonderful effort by the Puppy Advisor and help from the Lee Kent Fund for some of our rescuers who found themselves in difficulties. The Club also joined us, sadly without success, in an attempt to save two RR puppies abandoned with parvovirus.
The Fairman Memorial Salver was awarded jointly this year to Anne Coates and Maggie Higgins. Anne was recognised for her outstanding generosity in giving a home to so many Ridgebacks over the years, including nursing poorly ones back to health; Maggie for her kindness in kennelling so many of our homeless dogs at specially reduced rates and using her love and expertise to “turn round” some difficult ones which would otherwise have been problematic to re-home. Finally, it’s difficult to improve on last year’s closing remarks, so “Once again the thanks of the Trustees go out to all who continue to support us so generously in so many ways. We are immensely fortunate to have so many dedicated friends”.
Peter Jones, Chairman. March, 2010
The Christmas Party in December broke all records. The hall was positively heaving with people and Ridgebacks and a wonderful day ended up with a profit of well over £1000. We are grateful to our judges for the day, Maggie Higgins and Anne Coates, all those who helped to set up, clear away and worked in the kitchen to produce a super lunch and everyone who came for their good spirits and generosity. And the dogs were great too! Special thanks go to Liz and Paul Storey who brought along a hamper of luxury Christmas drinks to auction and to Tim Johnston & Jennifer Bogdany for donating a splendid case of wine for the raffle.
